Welcome to the 2008 ExpressMEN of the Year!

"i actually like to work with models who have little or no experience. i have a hard time working with models who only have 5-10 moves... and after that, it's a repeat of what they have already done. new models are easy to direct and don't have to unlearn bad habits"

"knowing that i did my best and that i continue to grow in all aspects of my work makes me smile at the end of the day."

"style, health tips? you’re talking with a guy that falls into the gap! (lol) do i admit that? i like simple – lots of black, brown, jeans - and i try not to over think my wardrobe. i over think everything else, the clothes i keep simple. health tips, go to a professional (lol) if it’s the only thing i have learned everyone is different. what works for me might not work for someone else."

"you have to have a thick skin for this business, i deal with rejection everyday and i guess the trick is not to take it personally, compartmentalize. you can work out, diet- know your client inside and out, but if you don’t get the job you have to realize it comes down to things that are out of your control. maybe the client wanted something younger, older, taller, shorter - a different ethnicity, it just comes down to things that you can’t change about yourself. so, there’s no need to beat yourself up, just keep plugging away, something has got to give!"

"what inspires me? determination, people that work hard for what they have and at the end of the day, still help the old lady across the street. people that say thank you, or smile when you pass them on the street. how’s that for an answer? (lol)"

"recipe for success? perseverance like most things it takes a lot of hard work aaaaa looootttt of hard work. anything worthwhile isn’t going to be handed to you, you have to really run after it."

"if you can see yourself doing anything else…. do it! be happy knowing that you might never make it. be okay with being less then perfect. i have never thought … okay, now i’ve made it, i’m perfect! work, work, like there is no tomorrow and be happy! modeling is only temporary, so do what you can with the time you have. shoot, find photographers and shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot. study and find out what looks good for your body type, find out how you should be marketed. and don’t comprise yourself stay true to who you are as a person."
credits: rodney lazaro/rodneylazaro.com
"well every photographer is different, but what i hope they see besides dollar signs… (lol) is a good time. i walk into a casting, a go see, or an audition the same way i approach a photographer; making them feel like i am the easiest guy they’ve ever worked with. you can have the best photographer in the world but if you’re not having fun it can be an absolute nightmare. i’m not saying abandon all work ethic and concentration, truly listen to what the photographer and client want, but have fun. So fun, … that’s my final answer"

"my out of place situation? sometimes, its all the time. i often feel like the guy from small town iowa, looking around the casting thinking who let me in here? they are totally going to find out."

he thought that he was going to business school, but everything started at the ground floor at of the “hall of law” at the west end of the iowa state fair grounds handing out flyers for a local restaurant. "actually i'm an actor. that's where i have my education. the whole modeling thing really just happened. i was going to do my headshots in l.a. and the photographer insisted that we do modeling shots too. they turned out good and suddenly i had scouts contacting me and img on the line and things got very exciting. i had to leave and couldn't sign with img because of other projects and commitments, however later on, i would love to work in the states, in the mean time i have to catch up with other projects, i travel in different parts of the world, doing what i love most- which is modeling and sharing my culture, talents and enjoying every minute of life."

"it didn't take me long to realize the rejections rarely have anything to do with you as a person. it's mostly about the physical thing. some love how i look, some don't. some book me for a job, some don't. rejection really isn't hard to deal with once you realize you have to work for acceptance. most people do. i'm sure giselle bundchen had to work for it too in the beginning"

"if you work out enough you can eat anything you want. if you don't you have to watch what you eat. personally i try to go for high-protein, low carb food, i don't eat a lot of candy or cakes or fires or chips. but if i had the will power to do cardio for an hour or two every day i could eat all that too."
"modeling is easy. nothing is ever "hard". with determination, hard work and belief in yourself, you can move mountains, and convert your dreams into realities"

"as a young boy, i longed to be a naval officer like my father. growing up, i always wanted to be as chiseled and well-groomed as the males in advertising. but being a filipino in america, i knew that my chances of making it big in this country would be slim. as i matured, i realized that the lack of philippine representation in main-stream media was a good tool in motivating me to try to break into that industry. if there aren't many filipino male models in america, then why not be one of the first to inspire others."

"comfort is my style. if you're comfortable with what you're in, then that qualifies as your own personal style. living in the bay area at california, the weather can be unpredictable at times. it goes from extremely foggy to warm and clear in a matter of hours. to adapt to the environment, i wear layers: undershirt, button up, sweater, and jacket. it's rare seeing me in just a plain t-shirt. even in hot weather, i try to wear a button-up or a collared shirt. it somehow fits my personality. my closet ranges from clean and preppy, to casual and urban. i like to mix it up to fit my mood. as far as designers, i don't have a particular brand that i like. if it looks good, fits well, and is reasonably priced, then i'll buy it."
credits: jw2 photo
"i can't recall a specific situation of where i felt out of place. i usually avoid putting myself in uncomfortable situations. but when i do find myself out of place, i try to make the most of it and have fun with it."
credits: vlad veksler
"i don't consider myself as a successful model. i haven't had any major deals or campaigns and i don't think i qualify to answer the question on what's the recipe to succeed in this field. my assumption would be that confidence, optimism, perseverance, and determination are important traits models should possess. you need to look convincingly confident in the product you're modeling. and without confidence, you won't have belief in yourself. everyone gets rejected in this industry. you have to suck it up, keep going, and hope for the best in the future."
credits: jw2 photo
"it's always hard modeling in my underwear, whether on stage or on camera. haha. part of the reason why i get so uncomfortable is because i just don't think i have the body to show off. that's why i don't have many body photos in my portfolio at the moment. also, it doesn't fit my playful personality. its always a challenge and i gain from it every time i have to do it."

"food is a vital component in filipino culture, so i didn't grow up with a healthy diet. and during college, the dorm cafeteria was basically a buffet, so i ate as much as i could. i was skinny for the majority of my life, so i would overeat to add some bulk to my bony figure. besides dancing hip hop 10 hours a week, i didn't have any other physical activity, this definitely had a toll on my body. i began to notice a major change in my weight during college. i went from weighing 125 pounds my freshman year in college to 165 my 4th year (and it wasn't muscle weight). so i really wasn't conscious about my diet and fitness until after college, especially before the pageant competition. after reading countless fitness books and magazines, i reduced starchy carbs and high fats from my diet. i replaced white rice and bread with brown rice and whole wheat. i reward myself at the end of the week with a delicious filipino meal after being disciplined for the whole week. i now weigh a consistent 145 pounds, and i'm happy with it."

"i do a variety of workouts, including circuit training, total athletic conditioning, weight training, and some cardio activity. working out has become one of my favorite pastimes. a day for me isn't complete without some exercise. it can be something simple like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, and parking my car at the farthest spot."
credits: iman studios bay area/ holly-berry (make-up)
"here's my advise for aspiring models, be comfortable with who you are, being comfortable with yourself boosts your confidence. stay positive, positivity will build your charisma it will draw people towards you. be passionate, to make it, you have to want it. without the passion for it, you won't be driven to work for it. maintain yourself - in the physical sense, take care of yourself, including your skin and body. proper nutrition, regular exercise, and grooming habits don't only make you look good, but they keep you healthy."
credits: david fabros photography/vision capture
"it's hard for me not to smile every hour, that's the philippines inside me, coming from the land of smiles, anything can make me smile, from babies, funny shows, good songs, and yes, food! knowing that i'm fortunate with everything that i have and surrounded by love of family and friends, i think these are enough reasons to smile."
jerald is not only a pageant winner but at the same time he devotes forty hours of his week as a payroll analyst for a research group at berkeley, he is also actively involved in philipine community events at bay area, on weekends he's at home with his family and friends at sacramento. jerald believes that rejection is part of this industry, and the only way to deal with it is to accept it for what it is and to move on, taking that event as an opportunity to improve one's self, after all rejection is part of the learning process in a school called life. to know more about him click jerald

"my summer style is mostly the laid back beach style. the summer night life usually carries the same attitude. winter on the other hand, i like to make it high class. during photo shoots for my port i like to try and stay way from name brands. i like to go with things people usually don't see. i also have a style to match my biker boy image, since i ride my street bike everywhere rain or shine."

"every photographer i have worked with has a role in making nothing but awesome lasting memories. from the small jokes to the demanding detailed precisions"
credits: trica padilla
"for aspiring models, just because your new doesn't mean that you can't out perform anyone's expectations! everyone has ideas remember not to be afraid to at least voice them. also it's really important that if you have a limit as to what your willing to do, don't let others lead you down a path you will regret. be open for constructive criticism and advise"
credits: ethan james photography
"working out to much can be a bad thing. you see lifting weights too much especially the wrong way can cause muscles to form in wrong places and become twisted with tight pinching pains. but on the brighter side working out and exercising builds a heathy mind by giving you more energy to carry on thoughout the day causing less stress that leads to better night's rest."
credits: ethan james photography
"my out of place situation? while modeling, i had not yet experienced that, hopefully if i found myself in that particular situation, i would be able to come out of it, after all life is a series of unexpected events and things can always happen."
credits: trica padilla
"my goal is to make a name for my family, and to show people it can be done even by a country boy like myself. and my other goal is to represent the christian side of this lifestyle. attaining this is surprisingly not a hard task at all. with great people that have the interest such as yourself's to help and give support. i have been amazed at the extent others will go to in order to provide anything, from advise, to the shirt off their back. its people like you that makes things possible."

four years ago, i woke up lying face down on the floor. i fell from the bed. but i was not really hurt, just shocked that it happened. that same year i was shocked to see my older patient lying naked on her bathroom floor, face down. i panicked. i was in nursing school, at that time,i guess i want to become a nurse that is why i went to that particular kind of school. it's a two step course, you have to finish the nursing assistant course first: cleaning dirty stuff and all unimaginable things before you can move on to become a practical nurse: the status of giving injections. but of course the nursing hierarchy doesn't end there, if you study one more year, you can then move on to become a registered nurse: privilege of bossing all the practical nurses around and giggling with md's. but if you really want to become a doctor yet you don't feel like being one cause you are scared of doing surgery and the risk of leaving an instrument inside patient's bodies, you can go back to school and for some years become a nurse practitioner, where you can do consultancy jobs, or in some states set up your own practice. and then there are always other options like working in the hospital as case managers or nursing administrators or even teaching, sharing your wonderful experience with young bloods who are totally clueless about what's happening behind the patient's door or give up everything and become a massage therapist, charge a hundred dollar per hour. but at that time, these things are not going on in my mind. i just don't know what to do. this older patient is way bigger than the jenny craig lady. and i got scared in the sense that the whole nursing floor might blame me thinking that i was the one who did this to her when the real truth was at that time, i just stepped inside her room, i was hiding from my nursing instructor who keeps on following me all over that day. she wants to make sure that i do the right stuff. but i mean who will make a mistake in cleaning patients, washing the floor, taking the thrash out, maybe in determining the blood pressure reading, at that time i am always on a guessing mode cause i can't hear anything. cecilia came in the room, my classmate whom i hated to be paired off during practicum because she always get into trouble, the last time we were paired off is that we are on the medical surgery floor and she was like interviewing the patient and asking about his pain level when he is totally bleeding and talking to students like her should be on the last item on his list. she found me on the floor trying to pull the patient up. she asked me if i think the patient is dead. i told her, "don't be silly, of course she's not", i showed her that the old lady is chewing snickers while lying face down. she helped me get her up, and then she stopped. she stared at the patient's body. i covered the patient immediately with the towel on the bathroom, the last thing i wanted is to have a perverted classmate staring at the patient. i can see the shadows of depression building up inside her. she is totally freaking me out. after i propped the patient back in bed, i gave a huge sigh of relief, it is so hard to recover from such situations cause if my instructor found out about what happened even if i was not there when the patient fell, i am so dead. that means no nursing assistant graduation for me and all my efforts in cleaning patient's bed, giving them bed baths, segregrating the thrash into different plastic bags just to kill time and yes to hide from my instructor, all these efforts will not gain any credits and will be unaccounted for the rest of my existence on this planet. i asked cecilia if she is ok. she told me that she is not going to grow old, she plans to end her existence before she turns fifty. i said to myself, "good for you". i did a couple of rounds, changing beds, wasting all the hospitals gloves, giggling with the regular nursing assistants and learning about the latest gossips on the doctors and nurses on the floor and hiding from my nursing instructor in between. i reported the incident to the unit's nurse, she brushed that aside and told me that its nothing new, she did not fell down but she always do that, she prefers to eat her snickers lying naked and face down on her room's bathroom. she then asked me to get her a frappucino with splenda, and details. i guess nurses likes to read about men's fashion too. or does that explain why she wears men's cologne? just before i left the nursing floor, i saw cecilia in one of the rooms by the elevator, and she was struggling to get the patient back in bed, but the whole room is in total chaos, the beds unmade, the thrash all over the floor, some on the bed, and "how did that bladder scan get in that room?", i curiously asked myself. i thought we are not allowed to do that. is she doing some kind of scan?, i mean that is ridiculous when she is worse than me when it comes to reading bp's, if i am in a guessing mode, she is more clueless, the last time i was with her, i caught her copying the bp reading's from other patients, that is so low, and worst of all she can't even operate a computer scanner much more a complicated equipment like a bladder scanner, she is in for total trouble and i don't want to be in that room when my nursing instructor found out all the dirty details that cecilia is currently up to. i sighed and started worrying about the long lines at starbucks.

"it was a daunting task starting my own line. it was really tough to get my designs into stores especially in the begining when nobody knew who andrew christian was. it was even a challenge to get the store buyers on the phone to talk to me. being an independent start up is not easy, but i stuck with it and was persistent and it luckily worked out for me."
"my growing up years were great. i had a tight knit group of friends and family that really supported me in my endeavors. it really give me a strong sense of self which really helped prep me for the cut throat world of the fashion industry. i feel really blessed for being surrounded with such a great support system."
"just the other night. a good friend of mine invited me over to his house for a dinner party. i mistakenly showed up an hour early. when i knocked at the door he was still in a bath towel and he's not yet ready. it was actually kind of funny to be caught in that particular situation."
"i am a dreamer and i do believe dreams can come true and be achieved. i am very much a self-actualizing person. it's one thing to have a dream, but you have to make it happen, it's not just going to fall into your lap."

"i love to experiment with light and color, and to work with new models. it's breathtaking to be working with someone on their first shoot. i tend to always start with the eyes - taking some great face or headshots, then moving on to isolate various parts of the body."
"if the model is willing, we then move to artistic nudes, or more. but even then, light and texture are an important part of what i consider my style. i am definitely not a photo-shop person - i prefer to get it right the first time."
"i ask a lot of questions, and ask the models to forget me, just think of someone they love behind the camera. sometimes i ask about food or favorites, other times about secrets or sex - and that always brings the models eyes to life in some way."
"i think as you get to know a model, both of you can relax and get into the groove of what the other is thinking, you can come up with that one defining shot. of course its impossible to get that shot when that is all you want - i believe you have to submit to the work and the session and to the exciting accidents of creation to really dig deep enough for the defining shot."

"theater work on large musicals can be very intense and involve large groups of people, i really enjoy the opposite experience of being alone with a model in the photo studio"
"besides working in the theater, i love to attend. i am also a fan of most team sports - the super bowl and world series gets me all excited. i love figure skating, and follow a couple of tv shows (friday night lights!) regularly. i am also a great gardener, and would love to do documentary films."

"i recently had a model who had been very open in his shoots -very open and honest - and he returned to shoot with his new boyfriend. of course there were things that had come up in our previous sessions (me finding beauty in all types, and the stereotype a&f look) that i started to refer to, and the new boyfriend was taken completely by surprise. That was my most recent oops (out of place situation)!"
"going home to my husband of 18 years! after all the creative craziness, it's great to return home and find the love despite all the daily drama"

"when i was on the plane ready to jump out (my first skydive) i was like, what the heck am i doing up here? i wanted to do it for a while and a friend said she wanted to do it too but when we got there i just felt out of place, but after that first jump i was hooked and have jumped 7 times and still pursuing that to achieve my a license then continue to my d license."

"the image that i’m trying to portray is that of someone who is full of life and confidence by just being himself. even though i’m only 5’4, it’s ok, i can still be a model and i want others who might be in the same boat to have hope when they see me. i want to inspire others, and tell them that they can do it too."

"during high school, i always go on auditions whenever i can, regardless of the results, i just kept my head up and tried again, i have a dream and i know how to get it. when i moved to california in 2001, i continued pursuing that dream and met some great people along the way"
credits: fashion enterprises 2
"the photographers see in me a bundle of life! lol, i know that’s kind of corky but all the photographers i’ve worked with always tell me how great it is to work with me. they say i have this great energy that’s so contagious that they find it hard to put the camera down and they also see a young man pursuing his dream, someone who knows how to have fun and be professional in a shoot; not to mention someone who doesn’t give up, a go getter."
credits: fashion enterprises 2
"you might have the all american boy look but if that’s not what they are looking for, you will get the boot. lol. after dealing with that reality, i just accepted the concept and just moved on. after an audition i usually treat myself on some ice cream, go to the gym or buy myself something, just a small reward for taking that audition which is a new step towards my goal."

"i grew up in an environment where i was taught to make sure that i always arrived on time and that i should always remember to be myself no matter what the situation is. so with those two things under my belt and experience, i would have to say that the recipe to succeed in modeling is to always follow your dreams, arrive on time (10 min. early if possible) and always be yourself. with those key things in mind, the sky's the limit!"

"rejection is something that takes time to deal with and being in this type of industry if you don’t have “the look” they are searching for, you are bypassed no matter what. when i first started modeling, i experienced alot of rejections during auditions. there's this part of me that feels that i am ugly and unappreciated and i would ask myself, what else do they want from me... or why don’t they want me… later on, i learned that i had to embrace their criticism and move forward. it wasn’t that i didn’t have a unique look or anything like that, its just that i didn’t have “the look” they were looking for and that’s something that every model has to deal with no matter how good you think your look is. this is modeling, its a very tough field."
"one of the hardest modeling experiences but not too dreadful was when i did a runway in baltimore, i had to deal with all the models backstage, changing in front of each other which was no big deal, it was different since it takes time to get used to being naked in front of everyone and changing clothes no matter what so you could come out next in line. besides that, at the same time i was dealing with stuck up models who wouldn’t talk to me, look down on me cause i wasn’t as tall as them, because i didn’t have as much experience or they just thought they were god's gift to the world and they just wouldn’t talk to anyone, and me, being a social person had to just suck it up and not let that bother me and do my thing." the journey in the modeling industry had been so far great for martin, and he is looking forward for more adventure. this time around he is no longer the young boy who is dreaming to become a model, because he is now a model who is out there living his dreams, bringing life in every shots and inspiring countless dreams. want more? click martin

my friend called me and said that he'll meet me at the seven eleven by my place, we are going for some slurpee, that is when the rain stops. its december, i'm 14, a chilly day to get slurpee but who cares, i always have fun with him. i don't know its like we share alot of things in common, even secrets we don't dare tell anyone. he was my bffl (best friend for life), known him since i was 8, we were not exactly neighbors, he lives couple of blocks from where i was. but we go to the same school, hang out with the same people and sometimes we both end up in the principal office for boredom violations. i was standing outside the seven eleven store, looking at all those giggly customers who are in the holiday mode. a small girl stepped by my foot and when i reacted she gave me the finger. i wonder how she will be when she reached her teen years, a homecoming queen perhaps? usually my friend always shows up on time, i wonder what the delay was. maybe he fought with her sister on who should throw the trash outside, which is an on going battle between them, the last time this happened he came to school with bleedy gums, her sister punched him and gave him a mouth sore that lasts for weeks. i called his number using my sister's cell phone, which i secretly snatched out of her room, both of us have this sister's thing going on. its like a hierarchy system that runs in our family. my sister is older than me, she thinks she is my boss. so she gets all the gifts and perks from my dad, cause my mom at that time is nowhere to be found. i mean, i don't really see her much, i don't know where she is, and what she do in life, my dad is a very patient man, the last time we looked for mom, it was past midnight, we found her all drowsy and boozed up in a rundown bar. my dad told me to stay in the car. he was furious, he channelled all the anger at me, and yet his eyes shows all the compassion in the world while he helps her get in the car, my mom responded saying that whatever happens in vegas should stay in vegas. my dad gave me the eye, a strong signal for me to keep my big mouth shut. half an hour later, my toes are freezing, i am wearing the flip flops which our neighbor had thrown in their garbage last night, i picked it up from their trash can earlier that morning, it's amazing their garbage cans are like walgreens. the seven eleven cashier told me to come inside cause its freezing. he figured that i don't have any money so he asked me if i want some hot chocolate or coffee, its on the house. i told him i am waiting for my friend and both of us will get a slurpee. i showed him my five dollar bill, with a smile, telling him not to worry cause we will pay. fifteen minutes later, i went outside cause i saw my friend who is in the car with other teens, they are in full speed. for split seconds, my friend saw me, he waved at me. he forgot that today we are going to plan how we are going to sneak in the principal's office to get his cassette player that was confiscated. he forgot that we are going to meet at seven eleven. he forgot the slurpee. that day i went home with frozen fingers, i spend all my five dollar on couple of slurpees. i sipped all cups behind my closed door. the following day, i got tonsilitis and i think the doctor said it was due to a peculiar condition called brain freeze.

"some relevant emotions can be captured in a slightest facial expression, however it takes multiple shots, lighting conditions and situational concepts to create the image for the final shot"
model: kyle
"i always forget to take the lens cap off, but doesn't everyone?"

"my style? well i usually wear something comfortable when i go out shooting...lol, commercial is what ive been told is my style, so i did some studying and they were right, everyone is selling something."
"first start conversation, so they can relax a little bit, everyone starts off nervous, i usually will do the pose first for them so they know what i'm talking about and then a little direction on the slightest moves...and then sometimes i explain the hell out of something...lol"
"what can make me smile at the end of the day? natalie, she's 3 now."
model: anthony
"models if you really want to do this do not procrastinate at all, there are so many opportunities out there, i've shot a few "models" that said this was what they wanted to do, but as the offers started rolling in, let's just say they got lazy. photographers get your hands on any kind of material to gain knowledge and hone your craft, and always look for critiques for your work, good and bad, it's something i'm always doing, i want to know what pleases everyone's eye, not just my own."
"five years from now, 39....lol, maybe i will do some traveling, shooting and in a new home"
model: thadd
"i used to have photography as my hobby but then it became my lifework. i love to travel, every now and then i get the itch to fly somewhere. fun? relax and then get busy...favorite time of year for fun is christmas when we have two parties in our home with over 100 people, truly good times!"
"i have a handful of role models who inspire me daily. however, in front of the camera, i inspire myself. not to be cocky, but many times following a shoot, even when the results are great, i know that i can deliver so much more. that's what drives me to do better next time and inspires me to deliver more in the next shoot"
"i think photographers see my depth. in front of the camera, i'm able to present a full spectrum of looks and emotions. additionally, i think they are equally amazed when they see that i pair this with a chiseled body. the intense development of both allows me to deliver an unparalleled combination of both facial and body language to produce a stunning shot."
"the only way to grow is through placing yourself in the unfamiliar and finding your way out. that's the secret though to being a better person - creating the greatest experiences and meeting incredible people you wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to discover."
"be creative. i've seen countless model and photographer portfolios which are very good, but repetitive with everyone they work with. sure, you can be successful in using a formula which works, but you're going to limit the depth of your abilities. being creative can help you find a look you didn't know you had, or pioneer something never before seen"
"no matter the outfit, i want to stand out as unique. that doesn't mean what i have on has to be outlandishly different or from a ritzy designer, but just because everyone has done jeans and a t-shirt doesn't mean i can't make jeans and a t-shirt look so good people on the street won't forget it. it's in the details – be aware of your body, how your clothing fits, what jewelry works and how to rock the right shoes. i do get ideas from magazines and campaigns, but i'll never copy it, i'll put my own spin on it."
"if you met me on the street, you would never imagine i have in me what i'm able to give the camera; i'm inherently shy and an introverted person. modeling allows me to be someone else – someone who's afraid of nothing, someone capable of 180 degrees of emotion, someone who everyone wants to be! that's the greatness of being in a public eye and that's the boy's dream – to be that person who takes it all on and conquers."
alexander is not afraid of change, for him life is an adventure, there was a time in his life when he got off the plane in germany, knowing nobody, not even a single german word, but he took a deep breath and brave his own way towards all the uncertainties ahead of him, and "later the next year i arrived home with the most amazing stories, friends and adventures – and best of all, I learned alot about myself", in every shot alexander brings in a myriad of different emotions, looks and personality transforming that shot into a powerful image, captured by the lens, forever. to see his portfolio click alexander william, he is also at model launch

credits: mark stout photography"i had never seen myself modeling until jan 2007 when i had my first photo shoot. i’ve always had insecurities about my appearance and body, but for the past months, i have been dedicated to fitness and nutrition and have reached most of my goals. that helps me to gain more confidence to step in front of a camera, that feeling is amazing. i get a true satisfaction knowing that i set out to accomplish something, and with enough time and effort i can achieved my goals."
"every photo shoot is different, depending on the photographer. sometimes you can get some very strange photographers in which case you never stop wondering when the shoot is going to end. on the other hand i’ve had some very fun photographers that i love being around; that definitely makes the shoot a lot easier. other than that i am always very aware of my poses, expressions, and the lighting. the more you are aware of what you are doing, the more you would be in control"
credits: lori j photography
"the most difficult part of modeling is when you’re starting out and building your portfolio for the first time. you learn how to emote, and what positions and expressions are successful. before my first photo shoot i did not fully realize how much work this really is. it is when you’re feeling awkward and un-natural in a pose that you get a truly amazing shot. the best part of modeling is when you become comfortable enough with your body and face, and finally understand what works and what doesn’t."
credits: mark stout photography
"there have been two very embarrassing moments during a photo shoot. the first is when i was shooting in downtown denver on a busy sidewalk, and in mid-pose i backed into a women holding a tray of coffee. she dumped all of the coffee on me (which was coincidentally captured on camera) and got very upset. the second instance is when i was posing on a log in a river and set my hand on a patch of slippery moss. i ended up falling backwards into the freezing river and blew the rest of the day!"
credits: mark stout photography
"the most important thing is to contact as many photographers as you can to do tfp shoots; get a lot of variety in your portfolio and find out what kind of look works best for you. there are many types of models out there, and not all of them have to have perfect faces or bodies. depending on what your body and face type is, you need to find what niche suits you."
credits: mark stout photography
"i realize that i can’t win them all. my look works for some genres very well, but for other genres very poorly. the best thing i can do is be confident in my work and find out what agents and buyers are looking for. it also helps to have a target in mind. once you discover what look you fit into well, then target agents and buyers that are going for that look. someone who fits well in commercial photography may not fit well in high fashion; that model would not want to submit work for high fashion agents."
music is alik's biggest hobby that it had turned into a career. he had been in classical music all his life, he hold a bm in oboe performance and pedagogy from saint cloud state univeristy in mn, and had perfomed in several orchestras around denver. currently he is busy teaching private and master classes in high schools and colleges around the denver area. one thing nice about alik despite his current success is that he never forgets "i would like to thank everyone in the industry that has given me so much advice and support – photographer, models, agents, and stylists. we all learn from each other, and without this support system nobody would succeed in this industry." to know more about alik visit, his portfolio click alik .

yesterday i was with my friend, i called her the queen of plaza, which is spanish for mall. she knows everything. when she called me earlier that day i asked her if she is breaking her promise that she will not shop this month because her credit card is filled up to its maximum limit after she went on a shopping frenzy the past months. she said we will just look around. she wants to get this teddy bear that you have to dressed up, its not really pricey but the problem is you have to go to the store early if you don't want to line up because this shop is very popular and everyday its raking in thousands of dollars in profit. it seems the easiest way to the heart of any puerto rican is through a teddy bear. there's really nothing special about the store its the concept. once you get your teddy bear, you have to shop for his shirt, underwear, short, shoes, watch, accessories, hat, in other words its like baby shopping. which translates into dollar amount for the store owner. such a clever idea. later on that day after being in line for almost two hours for that teddy bear. both of us are exhausted, we had some pasta and strawberry shakes. i popped the question to her, not the proposal one, silly, i asked her what's the difference between banana republic, gap and old navy. she said in her matter of fact tone, if you are cash less and you want a shirt you have to do it the navy way. if you like to see cute ones, you have to go to gap, cause it seems most of their sales clerk is cute these days. and if you want to have the studio feel experience you have to trust the banana. but she warned me the thing with going with the studio feel, is that you have to pay the extra cash. it turned out she was wrong, i got a five dollar shirt at banana republic and i shed thirty five for a short at the navy. and that's when i lost her. i hate doing this but i reported her name to the mall's information center. and so she was in the lost person list. her description and name was announced in the mall's loud speaker. actually i was thinking of going to office depot, do a photocopy of her picture which is in my wallet and paste it on the walmart's missing persons wall right by the store's entrance, i was gonna do that next but minutes later she came to the information desk, was all red all over, with an embarrassed look, she said to me i should not have done that, i asked her done what, you were missing, i told her that i panicked, i looked all over the place and still i can't find her, i mean this is a huge mall, the biggest in the whole US, so what does she expect me to do but resort to desperate measures, she doesn't mind that her name was announced all over the place but its the description that bothered her she said i should have said nutrition challenged instead of the word kinda fat or she added i should have gone jenny craig patient. i laughed. i apologized. both of us laughed. what stops me from making another giggle is that she told me we have to line up again for those smiling teddy bears. which also means that we will again be stuck for hours cause the line would be literally outside the store by the time we get there.
