"what inspires me? anything or anyone who dares to be different and set new standards"

"my first photoshoot was for a swimwear company, and that's what started it all, from there i went to other projects and fashion shows, traveled the road with designers doing trade shows through out the states, like going on six states within two months time...so far the experience had been very great for me, i loved what i'm doing and i'm enjoying it everyday"

"there's alot of things that's going on in my mind while i am in the middle of photoshoots, my experience with previous photoshoots is locked in my mental bookmark so i go back to them and see how this time around i can achieve better poses"
"modeling is a childhood dream but i never actually thought that i'd be doing this, but i am glad that i did because it had been a very enjoyable and memorable experience. just seeing myself transform from someone else from time to time is really fun. i think in order to succeed in this industry, you need to get over your looks, instead you have to know yourself more- your strength and weaknesses, how you will portray yourself in a product or how will you market yourself in this competitive field."
"usually my out of place situation happens backstage, where everything is out in the open, sometimes it feels awkward being in the same place with other models as we're changing and the staff are all over us, lol..even though we are all in shape, i still feel out of place sometimes lol, but this is part of the business, this is something that happens everyday to any model"
"my future plans includes landing in a movie role and starting an organization that will benefit the youth, i always believe that life is also about sharing and giving"

"in one of my first shoots, the photographer and i had come up with an idea of tying me on a train track, as we were shooting, i noticed the excitement building up with my photographer and when i turned around, i was shocked to see that there's an actual train headed towards me! it was scary, but we accomplished some great shots."

"i used to be a chubby, geeky, nerdy kid, the type that gets teased by the lunch time bullies. i always have a low self esteem, and modeling is something that never occured in my mind, in fact i never saw it coming. only when i reached high school, i become health conscious, i worked out, got fit and lost that chubbiness. but i still feel i am still the same geeky kid from grade school. only recently when i met this special person that i finally gave in and give modeling a try after realizing that there's somebody who really believes in me and will really be there to support me all the way through. i never realized that by stepping in this field i will gain new experiences, and see myself in a whole new frame, it is true that modeling made me grow up and discover new things that i've never thought that i can do"

"i love traveling and i am constantly reinventing myself. i am the type of person that is not afraid of change. so i think in the next five years or so, i may probably be in europe or spain with a successful career as a lawyer or model"

"networking is the key in this field. you have to get out there and meet people. this is a tough and competitive industry, having the support and contacts from other key industry players can make a difference in your career, added to that, you'll gain new friends and lifetime partners."

"eating healthy... like mcdonalds, taco bell, pizza, starbucks!! ha ha, just kidding. it's all about smart choices, if you're going to mcdonalds get the salad or snack wrap with the grilled chicken instead of the crispy, etc. and a good work-out a couple times a week doesn't hurt!"

philip is from london, he had been modeling for almost a year now, and he's interested in doing more projects with wild and eccentric concepts. his involvement in this field is not limited to modeling, in fact he got the bronze award at the british amateur international film festival for his kung fu spoof master. philip is NEXT. exclusive interview happening only in the site of excitement. EXPRESSMEN."in a photographic sense, i love the old masters like bruce weber, i've been fortunate enough to have held a copy of chop suey club and have a good read through, the whole book is a master piece. herb writts, aspects of greg gormond and the early versace images are all superb. in a personal sense, i'd say people inspire me, individuals who excel against all odds to achieve their potentials"
"i love film and choreography, whether its dance or fight scene choreography, they both display incredible rhythm and timing, i have made a couple of short films loosely based on old school kung fu movies, quite light hearted stuff, a lot of fun. snowboarding, skateboarding, breakdancing, thai boxing, cooking, fashion, property."
"for me, being involved in shoots is good fun and beats fixing peoples houses on weekends, which is what i used to do for a living! although still working in construction would like to 'fly a few kites' so to speak."

"last year, around this time, i was in asia! i had been selected to represent uk in the karate world championships in japan, the preparation was really hard because i was working full time as well as training every day. it was a fantastic experience and the japanese were excellent hosts, in the competition, i got through the 3rd round but took a pasting from azerbaijan, those guys are so hungry for it, you could tell that was their life, they went on to win the whole thing and later we found out most of them were special forces back home! tokyo is a great city, i would love to go back, but maybe with modelling next time, i couldn't afford to otherwise, its a very expensive place."
"out door stuff in the uk this time of year can be a bit chilly, apart from that i enjoy most shoots, that may sound like an automated response but as far as most jobs go, modelling is a lot more fun."
"i had always been interested in modeling, but i didn't have the time when i was younger because of my training schedules in karate, but i think if you follow your dreams, you will achieve it, and this knowledge is something that i want to share to aspiring models, you have to be true to yourself, if you don't enjoy what you're doing, you shouldn't do it, whether its in front or behind the camera, always listen to people but make your own decision, remember the choices that you make will affect the results"

"the wildest photo shoot? early this year a friend of mine jennika argent had an idea for a shoot involving a stylist, a make up artist and some women's underwear! she wanted to put me in full female make up. the project was to try and reflect a man's desire to experiment with make up and explore his feminine side, i was reluctant to participate at first, but it was a unique experience and the final images were really cool, even my mum liked 'em!
"i love seeing my family after a hard day, i like going out with my brother just for some food or just sitting around doing absolutely nothing. i think in this field you should know where the door is, what key to use and when to unlock it"
philip is currently enjoying teaching self defense classes while continuing his studies in quantity surveying. he is so easy to work it, and very open to suggestions, so i think he will definitely make it because he can adapt to changing situations which is an everyday thing in modeling. to know more about philip or just to check him out click philip

"i didn't realize that I wanted to be a photographer until i hit 37 (at least professionally). the lesson learned is once you've found your passion pursue it (don't wait). when my mom died in 1997 i realized life is short so its time to seize the day. my motto is you know you are getting old when you regret the things you haven't done."
model: phil
"one model showed up with a really bad complexion (i shot anyways & have some good images). one model was very hesitant even after trying to be compliant with ever little wish . (i learned to take rejection). one model baulked (too camera shy) even after an interview & discussing what i expected (go figure - you can't please everyone), i guess these are all in a days work"
model: zach
"ansel adams was my original inspiration for photography. when i saw bruce weber's early work bear pond i knew i wanted to do that "when i grow up", lately ethan james has really great work"
"i would say my style would be a combination of bruce weber, howard roffman, ansel adams. first priority is to get interesting poses followed by clear, focused, properly exposed images. i can always adjust to black & white, color adjustments, remove defects but if the image is burnt out or boring there's no hope what so ever. sometimes only a part of an image is really great and i focus in on just that element."
"current employment is ok, but doesn't fill my creative niche. thought about starting a photography career for the last 15 yrs. now that i am going on 52. it's do it or forget it time."
model: stefan
"a model's commercial life may be very brief. if you wait too long it may be too late. network, network, network baby. don't count on a model agency to do it all. be ready to model & if you are in school or other commitments give optional dates/times. can't tell you how many times models tell me they are not ready :[ always show up to a shoot on time, well rested, shaved, hair done, complexion as good as possible. be prepared (get references, ask questions, read contract, don't make assumptions).the same rules apply to good photography inversely (i.e. good models don't just show up at your door)."
"well most people have crazy dreams & want to move out of their little boxes (like stuck at a boring office desk job). i'm talking about a model i know right now (you know who you are). so embrace your crazy dreams like modeling (worst case you'll find out you had a fun adventure & maybe end up in a better place as part of the journey)"
"knowing that i did my best & didn't wait for fate to determine my future. i especially get a kick when a model i really want to work with feels the same!!!!! i see photography as a small way of being immortal. the images may well live on way past the model or the photographer. in some small way people years from now may be able to relive just a small part of what i have seen and the model has been (even if they are stuck at a boring office desk job)"

"i think i inspire myself, i love being me"
"i'm married and a multi-business owner, i think those are two great things that i am really passionate about, having a loving wife who will always there for me really means alot in fact coming home everyday be surrounded by the one i love really makes my day"

"i believe in reflecting the real image of the subject, there is no specific type, age, height or race, my photography is about the individual, our differences are what makes the images so powerful"

model: brandon
"i never really pictured myself going into photography, but i always considered myself a creative individual. i'm a creative writer and phd candidate in children's literature and film, so i love a good story and i guess that has transferred into my photos"
model: isaac
"neither models nor photographers should get into this field unless they are going to enjoy it. yes, it can be a job for both but it has to be a job they enjoy or else there's no point in doing any of it"

"new models should seek out quality photographers to build up their portfolios and new photographers should seek out quality models to do the same. i won't get into a discussion about who deserves to be paid (we all know the photographers deserve it) or which person is more important, but i will say both will go further in the field if they remain honest to themselves and to those they are fortunate to work with on projects."
model: alan
"people inspire me, because their differences are what allow me to continue photographing them. i'm also heavily influenced by film, some music, and of course the encouragement from my family and friends. i enjoy what i do and if it ever becomes a chore instead of a passion i'll put the lens cap back on the camera and never take it off again - but let's hope that never happens."
model: dustin
"the best way i can help a model really bring it out during a shoot is to make sure they are completely comfortable with anything we do from headshot to artistic nude. i make sure they know how to have fun during the shoot and that they are relaxed - cause if not, things will show up in the photo and the result would be too mechanical, stiff, or void of real emotion."
"well, i won't say who i was working with but the model knows this story. i was doing a late-night shoot on public grounds and it ended with two police cars questioning us for suspicious behavior. anyone who knows my work understands that sometimes i present models with provocative looks, but that's not something the police could comprehend - it only made matters worse. at the end of the night, we were told not to be out so late (it was 10 pm) arousing suspicion and to head home. the police even said they almost pulled their guns on us. who knew photography could be such a dangerous profession and/or hobby, eh? so i guess that's not a funny story, but i hope one day i can look back and laugh about it.
"i grew up watching films (mostly horror) so i have a long history with enjoying stories, tales, and well, blood and gore. but from all of that, my photography style is really about creating a tiny story that expresses itself in various ways for the viewer of the image. if an image doesn't narrate to the viewer, that's ok, but when it does it can be a most powerful expression. i photograph people to allow them to fall into their own narratives or have me create one for them."
model: colton
"knowing that i've made someone else happy always brings a smile to my face. that comes with anything i do, but with photography there's such a delirium of life that comes from seeing or hearing someone i've photographed react in a positive way to his or her images. it's an unrivaled feeling that just makes me want to share it with others in this creative endeavor."
model: isaac
"i believe in photo honesty, not photo beauty, so the idea of what photogenic has come to mean unsettles me"

"on my very first shoot, the make up artist wanted to use this liquid that looks like sweat, but it stays on you until you rinse it off. well she got it in my eyes, and it burnt my eyes for about half an hour. i couldn’t even open my eyes. so much for being a great model! wasn’t funny at the time, but i laugh looking back on that."
credits: maloney aguirre
"i am a health nut. of course i have my days like all others. i try to be in the gym, 4 to 5 times a week. keep active playing sports like hockey and golf all year round. i make sure no garbage goes in my body, only fresh food. no pop and lots of water. alcohol on the odd weekend, in moderation, it’s not that bad for you."
"i try to mix it up. i like the surfer skater look. on a daily basis i am more casual, but i do love to dress up on occasion and wow everyone. nothing sexier then walking around on the town with a plain white tee and some nice jeans. take that advise for what it is."
"some friends encouraged me, they said i should give it a shot. so i got some pictures taken, and i am not looking back. i am not with an agency or anything, but i still love it."
credits: maloney aguirre
"there is not much from the modeling industry itself that i would say inspires me. it is my self motivation to be someone in life that gives me my drive and determination that allows me to have the edge over other people."
"hard to say where i'll be in five years time, i will graduate by April 2008, i could be in law school, real estate perhaps, even modeling for an income, wouldn’t that be great? i just hope that i am stable that’s all"
"don’t be afraid! just go and do it. that first step of making a contact, or stepping into an agency is the hardest one. tell yourself that they should be begging you to model for them, its all about attitude. have the right one, and the sky is the limit."
"it could be anything from day to day. i try to smile at all times, even when things are bad. what don’t I have to smile about? i have good health, great family and friends and have been blessed to come from such a fortunate part of the world. i know that sounds too clichéd, but its true."
chris stubbens is definitely a name to watch out for. by investing in his studies, he is also investing on a stable future. modeling for all its perks, is not a stable industry, you have to be on your toes all the time, ready to be critized, ready for the next shot which can happen anytime. Chris will go a long way in modeling. he has the looks and charms. good luck chris. to know more about him click chris stubbens

"i have friends who doesn't have enough money to pay good photographers so i helped them, and the agents who saw their portfolios were impressed with the photos, that was the time that i realized that photography is something that i am good at, and something that i really loved to do, when i moved to san diego, this passion was screaming inside of me so i decided to take up photo classes and soon i found myself doing what i love to do best"

"during one shoot, i was positioned for a particular pose and it felt very straining on the joints and muscles, but i stuck thru it and the end result was probably the best shot of the entire shoot, awkward positions like this are really one of the things that models encounter everyday, but the important thing is to pull yourself together no matter how awkward the position or situation is in order to create that powerful shots"

"life is a series of visual observations. I feel that the quality and integrity of those observations are my responsibility. i choose to draw, to observe and record light as it moves through the spaces of my existence. the communication is reciprocal. what begins as a touch of graphite on paper, or paint on canvas, becomes sensual exchanges"

"moving back home from the commune after the constant urging of my parents, they let me live in the church tower, since both of my parents were pentecostal ministers, it was there where i spent every weekend partying and attended some of the best concerts - jefferson airplane, jethro tull, allman brothers, moody blues, emerson lake & palmer, dr john, john mclaughlin and the mahavishnu orchestra and many more, but I did graduate from high school that summer"

"nude art should feel natural, believable and creative. nudity in art is constantly evolving like any other art form. fine art is a combination of medium, quality of representation, subject matter, light, composition and the artist’s vision. the appearance of the model, old or young, fat or thin, clothed or nude, erect or flaccid, does not determine a work’s standing as fine art"
"when you’re past the preparation and into the moment of creativity… when the rules have been suspended and your mind is running full bore. the moment of creation where there is no fine line to consider, that's when inspiration hits me"
"if i could only choose one form of art to express my visions it would be hell. that would be like asking a singer to choose one note to sing, or a writer one word to write."
"a photograph is the result of the union of a photographer and the subject. two minds, the photographer’s vision and the chemistry that flows between them. then throw in variations introduced by naturally occurring events at the time of the photograph. when all is said and done the photograph is influenced by a large gene pool and funneled through the non objective eye of an artist. so i would have to say it captures elements of all that contribute. take the same photograph five minutes later and something will change and different elements of the same subject will manifest. life is far too elusive and changing to be captured in one shot"
"i wouldn’t even begin to guess or want to know where i will be 5 years from now. it would take all the fun out of it and spoil the surprise. alive would be good"
"during the low points in my life my parents saw an opportunity to get me to admit myself into a christian camp in saugerties, ny that converted gay men into straight men. it was a year of strict living schedule, forced bible study and memorization and no contact with the outside world, no tv and no newspapers. i think of it as mind control or brainwashing. when my year was up, they released me and certified me “straight”. i was not. about a year after that in 1979 i met my partner al and finally grew up. at that point in time i was finally in a relationship that would nourish my development as a person and an artist"
"for newcomers in this field, never stop aspiring but try to understand what it is your aspiring for. if you aspire for money and fame you will have to compromise your work and do what it takes to get ahead. if you aspire to develop the artist in you, don’t expect to make much money and be prepare to be an outsider. learn how to promote yourself and don’t rely on fate, chance or someone else to do it for you. be prepared to put in the time, the work and money. believe in yourself and what you are doing. finally, this is real life so there are no guarantees."
"what can make me smile at the end of the day? my partner alan robbins of 28 years. my whippet elliot and his antics. my beautiful home at table rock refuge. and a glass of wine"

" i do try to make my models comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera, it helps me to get natural looking shots and not simply posed pictures. i let the models be themselves to help bring out their qualities. when they are relaxed it is easier for me to get them to express themselves in front of the camera. after having worked with many models i have found out that the best element that any model can bring is a good attitude and a disposition to try new things."

"for aspiring photographers, if you have a new idea to show in your portfolio, usually it does not always come out on the first try, so work on it as many times as you need to, until you get the results that you want, the important thing is that you build a good portfolio at the same time learn as much as you can about this industry because that knowledge will really help you alot"

"i hate getting my pictures taken, i would skip photo session days cause i don't want to see my face in our high school year book, back then i was an art geek with thick glasses, art was my passion, i am into painting and drawing. ironically, when i was 18 some girls at work would tell me that i should go into modeling because i have the look, but i did not believe them, i never really thought that i was a model material, or even good looking enough to be photographed, but fate turned in some twist and i soon found myself with agencies that are interested in me, and i guess things just happen from there"
" i learned that sometimes we over expect things to happen, which is just a natural human behavior, but having big dreams without taking smaller neccesary steps will not get you anywhere. from my experience, i learned that whatever we want, we may not always get it on the first try, quitting is not the route to achieved those goals"
"i just started liking sushi. only, if it's freshly made at a good sushi restaurant. right now i'm not eating a lot of sweets, because i have to watch my stomach, ha ha ha. but i love mc donalds fries, gotta have that at least once a week! maybe one day when i'm not modeling anymore i can eat whatever i want. as far as movies go, i like action fantasy movies. transformers, resident evil, etc, even if it doesn't have a good plot but i'll go for the action and cinematography"
"if you ask anyone that has been in the business for awhile, they would tell you that it's not all that glamorous. it's a very competitive business, and since you're an independent contractor, you control how much and how far you want out of it. the challenges are keeping your game on top, and learning how to deal with rejections. in the ever so changing world of advertising, you constantly have to keep yourself up to date, like you need to have new pictures and marketing materials all the time. take rejections as a learning tool and use it as a stepping stone to achieve your dreams"
"i don't know that i would say asians always excel in modeling. from my experience so far, you just have to be in the right market for your type. but there are less asians doing modeling compared to others, and perhaps because thre are standards to meet like height, so there are less competition for them. it depends on who you ask if they think asians are attractive. once, i had an agent told a client that she doesn't think asian men are attractive. some people find asians exotic and mysterious and they're attracted to something that is different to them. in fashion modeling, they find beauty in different and odd things"

"i am always inspired by anyone who is successful and accomplished in the entertainment industy. i think anybody can be successful in this field however you need to have a thick skin in order that you'll outwin all the challenges that comes with this profession. having great looks, good attitude, friendly personality, smart networking and a little bit of luck are keys that can unlock doors of opportunities"
"one time at this shoot, i had a half naked brazilian model laying on top of me for almost an hour. it was really frustrating. ha ha, psyche! modeling is great, never had too much of a hard time honestly. runway shows can be nerve racking, and some shoots can be difficult and exhausting. but in a nut shell, modeling is an exciting field, cause everyday, you just don't know what to expect"

"i had a pretty hectic childhood. moving around all the time, i went to orange county and las vegas for elementary school and studied middle school in europe, and came back to the states to finish up high school at sacramento, i guess these experiences made me more flexible which is really great since modeling is also about flexibility and ability to adopt to different projects, concepts and situations"

"where will i be five years from now? on top of hollywood. but at the same time i am happy and contented on where i am right now, i know it takes time and efforts to transform those dreams into realities, i am determined to really work hard in order to fulfill my goals. in the mean time, having the support and knowing that my family is in good heatlh, is enough to make me smile at the end of the day"

"i grew up in suburban new york, a die hard yankee fan. all i ever wanted to be was a ballplayer, when i didn’t mature fast enough to make it to the high school team, i started playing guitar and i joined a band. i was a child of the 60’s, so the obvious extracurricular activities of the day were in order. (love-in, be-ins, greenwich village, woodstock, etc.) i got married at 20 and was a single dad soon after, for 22 years. during those years i was a goldsmith and artist"

"i was filming this project and the director kept asking the "real" actor to tone down her acting, never once correcting me. the part called for a laid back approach, so i know it wasn’t my acting chops, yet it felt good that i didn’t need the direction, yet she did. yet other times i’ve gone for auditions, and made a complete ass of myself, with my total lack of knowledge. i’ve since taken some acting lessons, which really helps, but basically i don't take myself so seriously, whether its acting or modeling, i am having fun cause i love doing it, i think at the end of the day, that's important"

"i never, ever, really thought of myself as a model. i was only after being around my daughter’s acting class, some headshot photographers were blowing smoke up my ass and telling me i should get my own headshots. they all agreed i had a look that would work in shows like "law and order", you know, like the street cop. seeing that i needed a headshot for my real estate business, i had one of them do it for me. i posted them on a model site as a lark. in less than a week i got a call from the art director of new york press for a cover. that’s when i figured there was a market for my look"
credit: jay sullivan"i think i am attractive without being too much so. i never could stand to see myself in photos before, because i can see all the faults. getting older, makes it less important"

"i did not really see myself going into modeling, however i learned something, modeling opened new doors for me, i met new friends and had really improved my self esteem and confidence. so i really enjoyed this field. but acting had been my passion. i think through acting, i can express what's inside me, there's really more to acting than giving life to the roles that your performing, acting goes beyond that, its fulfilling, its uplifting"

for adam, the first element to produce a powerful image is to make the model comfortable. communication between him and the model is crucial in order to bring out the emotions that will be captured by the camera. added to that its all about attaining balance in light, set and other production elements. producing art through photography is a dream job for adam, through this field he was able to explore his creative talents, travel, and touch countless lives.

credits: luigi vera/ vestige/hair: victoria husband " i can't really say where i get inspiration for all my shoots often i see what i'm shooting with beforehand and suddenly all these ideas pop into my head and i'll start pitching concepts to the teams behind the shoots and hope that we can come to an agreement and build up on something amazing. as far as concentration, for whatever reason i've always been good at concentrating. there can be a crazy homeless lady in front of me smearing poop onto the counter at the grocery store and licking it up, and i'd still be standing in line as if nothing was going on."
